Frequently Asked Questions
Butter Questions:
What is meadow butter?
Answer to question 0
What time of year do you make Meadow butter? Crème Fraîche? Is it always in Stock?
Meadow Butter is a seasonal, Grass-Fed product produced only when the cows are outside on fresh grass pasture. In the Upstate New York climate, that criteria is true from April thru November. We strive very hard to produce a surplus of butter during the grazing season to store away a winter stash in our freezers to carry us (and you) from November thru March. However demand has historically outstripped production, and as such we cannot always guarantee 365-day availability of Meadow Butter.
Crème Fraîche is a Grass-Grazed product, and supplemental feed given during the winter months allows the Crème Fraîche farm partners to continue production year round. So, we (and you) have year-round access to fresh Crème Fraîche.

Do you verify the absence Antibiotics and hormones in your products?
Every single batch of Meadow Butter and Crème Fraîche is sampled and tested for Hormone and Antibiotic compliance, with a duplicate sample kept in cold storage if need for future verification arises. Records of all tests are stored digitally.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY "GRASS-FED" AND "GRASS-GRAZED?" Aren't they the same thing?
We can wax poetic over grazing terminology (and we have gone in-depth on this topic on our blog) but the short answer is as follows:
Grass-Fed: The cows enjoy a diet of only pasture, hay, and hay ferment all year.
Grass-Grazed: The cows have a diet that consists of a minimum of 40% fresh pasture during the grazing season, and their diet is supplemented first with hay, then Non-GMO grain or Non-GMO corn silage (a grain ferment).

Can I leave my butter out on the counter?
For food safety reasons, we do not recommend storing Meadow Butter on the counter. Other than the salt in our salted butter, Kriemhild Dairy's products do not contain any stabilizers or preservatives. Some people have had success using a butter bell (french butter dish). They do require water changes and must be stored in a cool location so the butter does not melt, which keeps it in the bell rather than falling into the water.
